We stopped by at Burke's (at the entrance to Ferrario Ford this afternoon, and picked up a couple of sandwiches for dinner. There seemed to be very little activity (@ ~3:30 PM), despite the remote broadcast that was supposed to be happening there. The signs said they were on the "Wings 104.9" frequency, but there was nothing live and direct there. Had I been the owner of the place, I would not be a happy sponsor. Back when we used to do remotes at various businesses, we did remotes that brought in people and made everybody happy. Heck, Ron Bisson and I even did a remote one Saturday afternoon from Ed Faulkner's Mobil, a service station on Westinghouse Road, and it was a blast (I know - nobody ever does a 'gas station remote'). Ron had successfully done some of them back home in Lewiston, ME, so we decided it would work here, and it did.

Anyway, the sandwiches are now history  and they were excellent as always. Actually, Burke's BBQ was the only thing there that looked interesting.

hey overland, Wink 106 and ferrario gave away a 2010 mustang about a half hour prior to your arival, i imagine it was winding down. i worked from 8-3 today but i heard them give the car away right after 3pm... i dont know why they had the wingz van there, definately a wink thing... BYB all the same anyways

did you have the beef or pork, both are awesome but i love prefer the beef, not really as fatty and gelantinous for me. reguardless its bbq is legendary for my VERY YANKEE SELF..... furthest south i ever been was to North Myrtle beach christmas of 07, and before that the furtherst south i been was cape may nj, and baltimore md.

opantfan32, must be they were winding down by then. A 2010 Mustang? Not bad. I wonder how many people the remote broadcast drew. I imagine they bring the same van to any of the remote broadcasts they do, but the "Wink 106/Wingz104/etc." stuff gets to be a bit much. Call signs went the way of dinosaurs a while back. There used to be:

WENY (aka, "weenie")
WELM (aka "welm")
WEHH (aka "weetch" - that one really used to bug its owner, Frank Saia, who was also a ham radio operator...W2TVD)
WIQT (aka, "wicket")

Sherry had the beef and I had the pork; both were excellent.

If you head south again, let me know, and I will send you our list of authentic Southern BBQ places along the way. We found several of them at www.hollyeats.com and the Gamecock Central BBQ web sites. We go to MBSC every October, and even did a February trip there a few years ago. We call the October trip the "Annual Flying Jeep Seafood and BBQ Run", although on the last trip, we found an excellent Italian place (normally unheard of in the South) in Myrtle Beach.

I have known Mike Burke for about 7 years. While I have not been to his new trailer, I can attest that he is an excellent cook. He worked for A Step Above Catering for quite some time, and also ran the old Poppy's Place- Main Street Cafe? in Hhds. He is a hard worker who grew up off of Ridge Road working on a horse farm. He has a very likable personality, outgoing and friendly, and would do anything for the people he cares about. He has been through a lot and I'm sure has some amazing stories to tell. Ask him about Billy Martin's jacket (yes Billy Martin the Yankee). I did see him on the news perhaps for Thanksgiving delivering food to work crews that could not leave their work sites for the holiday, which is fitting to the type of person Mike is. He is a good guy, you can't help but like him and his food. I am looking forward to trying some bbq myself...but if I know Mike, I had better try it soon. While he is very talented and friendly, I fear he may be "hopping" places more frequently...no disrespect...but I don't think he will be around for years to come.(Although I do hope he does) So enjoy it while you can!

From Mike's website:

CLOSED JANUARY and FEBRUARY
We will be closed in January and February due to influx variations
of the winometer valve in the dual autonimitration mixer pod that
interferes with the salient flash point of the duotronic glick matrix
causing . . . oh hell, it's just too cold out for the smoker to do a good job!
We'll be open in the Spring!! See you then!!

I don't know if I can wait until spring for a Q fix.
