Elmira Police Department's new deputy chief of administration said Friday that his first priority is working on the department's new Regional Public Safety Training Center.
Michael P. Marrone, who was promoted from captain, was sworn in to the office Friday in a standing room only ceremony at city hall.
Afterward, he told reporters he has a lot of work to do to make the training center in Pulaski Park reach its potential.
"Once we get the building totally up and going, I think we'll really hit the ground running," Marrone said of the training center, which Chief Scott Drake in January said would offer classroom space to other city departments and nearby volunteer fire departments in addition to housing the new police academy.
"So far it's going great," he said. "We've got a lot of in-service training scheduled there, and we got the first academy going, which is really moving smooth."
The first class began in January, with three recruits from Elmira Police and two from other law enforcement agencies.
Classroom instruction for that class will be finished in May, Marrone said. The students must then complete 160 hours of field training to graduate, he said.
Marrone said in his new role, he would have a lot more paperwork than while he was captain.
"I won't be out on the street at all," Marrone said. "I'll be ... keeping things running from the accreditation and the administration side."
Marrone was sworn in before Deputy City Clerk Priscilla Roberts. His father, F. Michael Marrone, a retired Elmira Police lieutenant, pinned the new deputy chief badge onto Michael P. Marrone's uniform.
"Mike has demonstrated management skills that are critical for leadership of the department into the future," Drake said at the ceremony.
"His extensive department experience as well as his training background will be a great benefit to the department."
The new deputy chief is a 22-year veteran of the police department. He joined as a patrol officer and has been a sergeant, lieutenant and patrol captain. He was most recently in charge of the evening patrol shift.
Marrone also has been commander of the detective bureau and SWAT team.
